The most simple answer is, they are nearly the same. It’s not like we’re going to crash a spacecraft on the surface of Mars if we say one versus the other (like meters vs feet).
But, you’re probably here because you want to go deeper.
We’re here to help.
The Origin of The Blazer
The blazer can be traced back to the crew of a British naval vessel who needed to look good for Queen Victoria in 1837. To prepare for a formal review, the captain had navy blue jackets with gold buttons made-up to impress the queen. It worked and they looked so good men began to copy their outfits, adding diversity beyond the black tailed suit coats of the day.
What was the name of that famous ship? The HMS Blazer.
In the US, blazers were first worn mostly by the rowing clubs of elite ivy league schools. From there they leapt to the mainstream.
So the blazer’s heritage hails from England and the navy.
The Origin of The Sport Coat
The sport coat was developed around the same time as the blazer, but on land versus sea. It was originally worn as a hunting and riding jacket by upper class gentlemen in the English countryside. It made its way from the field to the pub as a status symbol and point of pride for the sporting gentlemen.
It’s literally athleisure from the 1800s.
Blazers vs. Sport Coats Today
Today, sport coat, sport jacket and blazer have converged to largely be interchangeable. When someone (especially your grandpa) says “grab your sport coat” he isn’t being specific such that a blazer won’t do. It’s just his terminology. Most people consider them to be the same.
But getting more technical, there are differences.
The Simplest Way To Tell Them Apart
To tell a sport coat from a blazer, here’s how to do it:
Sport Coat:
A sport coat is more casual, consistent with its outdoor heritage (think English countryside).
Most sport coats aren't offered with matching pant.
They are known to come in patterns and colors that are beyond what you expect to find in a blazer or suit.
And because they are less formal, they may use rugged or more casual materials (like a heavy wool).
Blazer:
A blazer typically has a more formal vibe (think English Navy).
It might be offered alone, but could also be part of a suit. In Bluffwork’s case, we offer suit separates, which means you can purchase them separately and wear the jacket as a blazer, the pant as a slack, or together as a suit.
The blazer’s fabrics and colors are usually more conservative, consistent with its formal vibe.
Bluffworks Sport Coats and Jackets
In the Bluffworks line, two of our blazers are like sport jackets or sport coats: the Hopsack and Telex.
We still call them blazers because we find the term to be the most flexible. Where people might call a sport coat a blazer, it's seldom true the other way around.
Our Hopsack Blazer is a great example of what might be considered a sport coat. Its linen-like fabric is more casual, perfect for high heat travel or a summer event. Traditionally, linen was one of the most wrinkle-prone materials, but we developed performance materials that are breathable, machine washable and wrinkle-resistant while looking and feeling like the classic we meant to achieve.
Our Telex Blazer is a special thing. It strips the garment down to its most essential that in many ways carries itself like a formal blazer. But, we utilized a lightweight ripstop material to embrace a tech edge. The result is, it weighs just 1lb.
We offer two highly versatile blazers that also come with a matching pant.
Our best selling blazer is our Gramercy. About to be released in a version 2.0, the Gramercy has always been our most popular travel blazer and suit because it is the most versatile. The fabric has a wool-like appearance that is formal enough to pair with its matching pant for a suit, or casual enough to look good with jeans.
Our formal Presidio suit is the most beautiful, machine washable suit you can find. It was inspired by the fact that our most formal events - be they weddings or meetings - often involve travel. Which means the suit that comes out of your bag needs to look like a million bucks, with no time for a ridiculous dry cleaning expedition.
Remember how we said a hallmark of a sport coat is that it will never be made into a suit? Well, there is an exception to every rule.
When fashion pushes boundaries, colors and patterns assumed too bold for a suit can shine.
What All Bluffworks Jackets Have In Common
Bluffworks makes four blazers that are first and foremost, both wrinkle-resistant and machine washable. Our blazers come straight out of your bag -- or your washing machine - ready to go.
We use high performance fabrics that are cool and breathable. So although some of our blazers like our Hopsack and Telex are featherweight, our Presidio and Gramercy also make great summer suits.
Lastly, we love pockets. With hidden security pockets, we built our blazers and suits to comfortably carry your things for any kind of trip.
We hope this helps. Whether you’re shopping, just curious or trying to win an argument now you can reference the influence of Queen Victoria alongside the English countryside.
And, if you’re about to lose a $20 bet on sport coat versus blazer and our information goes against your argument, just go with “it depends."
